Newmarket Racecourse - Home of the Guineas
In the immediate vicinity of this unique
racing town there are some 3000 horses are in training. In
addition to the two historic racecourses, The Rowley Mile
and The July Course, it is the home of the The Rowley Mile
is named after King Charles II "Old Rowley" who
founded the Newmarket meetings following his restoration to
the throne in 1660. The Rowley Mile Course has been home to
the first two of the five great "classic" Races,
the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas, since
1814 and 1809 respectively, and also stages many other world
famous races including The Champion Stakes on "Champions"
Day. The Cesarewitch and The Cambridgeshire.
The profile of the live audience on the major
race days at Newmarket is of particularly high calibre, including
British and overseas royalty and politicians, global captains
of industry, city analysts and international inventors, and
celebrities from sport and show business. In short a collection
of "the good and the great."
Course Facilities
Newmarket Racecourse operates a three enclosure
system on all days at the July meeting and on feature days
at the Rowley Mile. This enables racegoers to purchase entrance
tickets of their choice from the following options:
Members' Enclosure
This enclosure is open to
Annual Members and any racegoer purchasing a Day Members'
badge admission. Members' Enclosure admission entitles you
to enjoy the best facilities Newmarket course has to offer
and the best views of the Winning Post, Parade Rings and Winners'
Circle and also provides access to the other enclosures (Grandstand
& Paddock Enclosure and Family Enclosure) on the course.
Please note that smart dress is required in the Members' Enclosure.
Grandstand & Paddock
The Grandstand and Paddock provides good grandstand race
viewing with access to view the Parade Rings and Winners'
Circle and to the Family Enclosure. The bookmakers are located
in this and the Family Enclosure.
Family Enclosure
The Family enclosure is found furthest from the winning
post, visitors to this enclosure do not have a view of the
Parade Rings or Winners' Circle. The Family Enclosure offers
race viewing from temporary stands and catering outlets operate
mainly from mobile units. There are bookmakers located here
as well as plenty of Tote betting outlets. There is an excellent
children's play area plus, on most days, a fully supervised
crèche for 2-8 year olds. Picnics may be brought into
this enclosure.
Getting to the Newmarket racecourse
Road
The A11 and A14 provides
easy access from the major cities of East Anglia and from
both the M11 and A1.
From London M11 exit at junction
9 for the A11. Exit at A1304 for Newmarket. The July course
is on the first roundabout to the left. The Rowley Mile Racecourse
is straight over the first roundabout, follow that road that
is signposted for Newmarket town centre) the turning is after
approx. one mile on the left.
From Cambridge A14 towards
Newmarket. Exit at the A1303 Quy turning. The July course
is on the first roundabout to the left. The Rowley Mile Racecourse
is straight over the first roundabout, follow that road which
is signposted for Newmarket town centre the turning is after
approx. one mile on the left.
From Norwich From the Barton
Mills roundabout follow the A11 for 9 miles. Exit the A11
on the A1304 slip road. At the first roundabout (with clock
tower) go straight over and through the town. The Rowley Mile
Racecourse is on the right handside. For the July Racecourse
follow the road out of Newmarket town and at the first roundabout
you approach, turn right for the racecourse.
From Ipswich Follow A14
for Newmarket. Exit at the B1506. At the first roundabout,
which has the clock tower, go straight over and through the
town. The Rowley Mile Racecourse is on the right handside.
For the July Racecourse follow the road out of Newmarket town
and at the first roundabout you approach, turn right for the
racecourse.
Train
The are services that run
from London Kings Cross and Liverpool Street to Cambridge
and Ipswich where onward connections by rail or road can be
made to Newmarket.
Air
Stansted airport is approximately a half a hour's drive
from the Newmarket racecourse using the M11 and A11.
Shuttle Bus
The Newmarket racecourse provides a complimentary shuttle
service on all race days. This service runs between Newmarket
Town Centre and the course starting approximately two hours
before the first race with pick ups at Palmers Department
Store, The Rookery Shopping Centre and Newmarket Railway Station.
Newmarket Railway Station pick ups are timed to coincide with
the arrival times of trains from Cambridge and Ipswich. The
return journeys from the racecourse commence around 45 minutes
before the last race has been run and continue for up to two
hours except on the "Newmarket Nights" evening meetings.
