About horseracing at Chester

There are 12 fabulous race meetings Throughout the flat racing season from May to September. These include two festivals, one in May and another in August, both lasting three days.

There is no racecourse in the world has a more historic setting than Chester's Roodee. It was here that the Roman Legions arrived to build their fortress Deva. In the days of Roman occupation, the River Dee washed up to the walls where now, thousands of racing fans stand to cheer on the Winner of the Chester Cup.

Back to the early Sixteenth Century are the first official records of horse racing at Chester, which makes it the country's oldest Racecourse. With almost five hundred years of history behind them , no other Racecourse is as well positioned to offer all the excitement and entertainment which "A Day at the Races" brings.

The prestigious May Meeting is a three day affair that boasts the Chester Vase, Chester Cup and the Ormonde Stakes - this is Chester's premier event. There was over 10,000 bottles of Champagne consumed in 2003 , this is the event that attracts all racegoers, from all walks of life.

The flat racing season continues throughout the Summer months with both day, and the evermore popular, evening meetings. There are a number of highlights during the season. These evening meetings include the two-day July Festival and Family Funday and a new 3 day festival in August. Whichever race meeting you choose, the Chester Racecourse team can guarantee you an unforgettable experience.

Getting to the Chester Racecourse

Travel information The road and rail connections to Chester are excellent. The city of Chester is linked to the national motorway network via the M53, M56, M6 and is within easy reach of the Manchester International Airport.

Please note that there are temporary traffic signs erected on racedays on: M53, M56, A51 & A41.
