Ayr racecourse - Home of The Scottish Grand National and
the Ayr Gold Cup
Ayr is the premier racecourse of Scotland,
hosting both Flat and National Hunt fixtures. The racecourse
normally holds at least 25 days racing every year Ayr is host
to the Scottish Grand National, the Ayr Gold Cup and a host
of other valuable races during it's year racing programme.
The Scottish Grand National is the highlight of the racing
calender, held in April, just a couple of weeks or so after
the Aintree equivalent with many top performers taking in
both races. None have so far emulated the great Red Rum who
won both races in 1974.
The Ayr Gold Cup, a 6 furlong sprint, is run at the Western
Meeting in September is one of the most competitive sprints
in the Flat Racing calendar, attracting large crowds from
all over the country. Such is the lure of this race that trainers
of the standing of Jack Berry have been moved to declare that
the highlight of his career was winning this race.
